What is a renewable energy? First, an energy source that is not renewable is finite. Energy sources like petroleum, natural gas, and nuclear fuel are all finite. No more is being made. Once they are used, they are gone. On the other hand, renewable energy is any form of energy that can be produced from regularly recurring natural resources. There are many forms of renewable energy like renewable fuels and renewable natural gas. Energy sources like wind, sun, water, and plants are all renewable. These basic sources of energy can be harnessed by a variety of collection and storage devices. Wind and sun are captured by windmills and solar panels. Both are converted into electric energy. Both sources are more or less readily available in specific geographic locations. They are also more or less dependable in specific geographic locations. Water energy, more commonly referred to as hydroelectric energy, can be temporarily stored by barriers such as dams and then allowed to flow through turbines to generate electric energy. Tidal water can be harnessed in a similar manner. Plant matter, usually referred to as starchy or woody biomass, can be converted into a variety of fuels by a variety of biological, chemical, and thermal methods. Plant biomass is renewable as long as it is replanted and harvested in a continuous cycle of plant, grow, harvest, re-plant.
