A gasification expert is an expert in the process of converting biomass or other organic carbonaceous feedstocks into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The gasification process involves heating the material to a high temperature of > 700 ₒC without combustion by starving the material of oxygen. There are many types of gasifiers and many gasification techniques. This is where the gasification expert’s knowledge becomes valuable. Often trying to select the appropriate technology for a particular situation is the first area that a gasification consultant can assist. The choice must be made between updraft gasifiers and downdraft gasifiers, fixed beds, fluid beds, bubbling beds and circulating fluid bed gasifiers, anaerobic gasifiers and air blown techniques, and high pressure and ambient pressure methods. Some of these produce low btu gas, while other produce a medium btu gas. All these things must be considered in light of the particular situation.
Investing in a project, or purchasing a technology that uses gasification, is an endeavor one should only undertake with the expert assistance of the gasification expert. The methodologies are not equal, yet all have a purpose and a place. As an example, there would likely be different technologies involved in the production of a liquid fuel than those for running a boiler. And, once the gasification technology is chosen, the gasification expert can assist and oversee the design, build, installation, and startup of the plant. Likewise, the gasification consultant can assist with an existing plant to help ascertain cost saving measures or correct bottlenecks or problems. Finally, in litigation involving gasification, the expert becomes an invaluable asset to those involved.
