Gasification is a process that involves heating biomass or other organic carbonaceous feedstocks to a temperature of > 700 ₒC without combusting the feedstock by starving the material of oxygen. A gasification consultant is an expert in this process which converts these materials into carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide that can then be used in other downstream processes. Here is where the consultant’s expertise becomes invaluable; there are many gasifiers and gasification techniques. There are updraft gasifiers and downdraft gasifiers. There are fixed beds, fluid beds, bubbling beds, and circulating fluid bed gasifiers. But there’s more, there are anaerobic gasifiers and air blown techniques, as well as high pressure and ambient pressure methods. Some produce low BTU gas others medium BTU gas. If you are about to invest in or purchase a project or technology that uses gasification, you probably realize that while all methods have a purpose and a place, all technologies are not equal. Your desired final product will dictate which gasification process makes the most sense. If the goal is to produce liquid fuel or run a boiler, there will certainly be different suitable technologies. A trained expert can guide clients toward the best gasification technology for the job.
