Bio-Oil is a generic term for a complex mixture of chemicals obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass including lignocellulose agricultural wastes and wood products. The composition of the oil can vary significantly depending on the biomass source, pretreatment, the method of pyrolysis, and the use of catalysts. Bio-oil typically contains significant amounts of oxygenated hydrocarbons. The high oxygen content decreases the bio-oil stability and prevents being used as a drop-in transportation fuel. It can be used in boilers and turbines that have been modified to deal with corrosion issues. The bio-oil can be upgraded by a variety of separation and chemical processes to reduce the oxygen content and convert them into a drop-in fuel.
