There are many types of food experts, including experts in food ingredients, food additives, food colors, Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) substances, and processing aids; those in dietary proteins, herb and spices, high-value oils, and other substances at risk of adulteration; those in functional ingredients and special nutritional ingredients intended to support human health. Food Science is a multi-disciplinary field involving chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, and engineering to give one the scientific knowledge to solve real problems associated with the many facets of the food system. These food scientists, also called food technologists, are scientists who specialize in the technology of the food and dairy industries and often work in research and development to study the chemical changes that take place in stored or processed foods.
Food production and food ingredient experts are often asked about the regulatory differences between human food and animal feed. A simple starting point is to note that according to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the term “food” applies to food for both humans and animals. Also, many of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations are the same, albeit often listed separately in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
In the production of human and animal food, there are some obvious contrasts between what is considered acceptable for humans vs animals. Yet, the processes themselves are often remarkably similar, noting that notwithstanding the differences in these processes, the overall goal of all food manufacturers is the efficient production of safe, quality food that meets all regulatory requirements for its target market(s).
A food production expert is likely trained in nutrition, chemistry, and biology, and has in-depth training and proficiency in regulatory compliance. These experts must have practical experience with the food production processes to guide clients through the steps necessary to achieve high-quality products which meet regulatory compliance and be profitable.
