Financial Due Diligence in Renewable Energy
Financial due diligence is an important step for securing financial backing. Most renewable energy projects and technology proposals will receive money from investors, financial institutions, or grant makers only after they pass the scrutiny of major due diligence. Securing the upfront financing and arranging due diligence, from experts or firms that can offer the most in-depth and valuable scrutiny of a process or project, can be a major undertaking for entrepreneurs or companies that are focusing most of their energies on fine-tuning their idea or technology. There is often separate commercial, technical and legal due diligence, all intended to offer some assurance—to the developer and to the potential financial backer or institution— that the technical, financial and political risks are sufficiently low that the project has a strong chance of reaching the stage of viable and sustainable commercialization. As they say, “you only get once chance to make a good first impression”.
What about projects that are self funded? Even companies that use their own money to develop projects are best served by having a third party conduct due diligence. First, it will be crucial to learn from outside experts if there are any flaws or items of concern in the project. This will save a great deal of money in the long run, and will be important in the company’s borrowing or evan at a future sale. Second, the information gathered for due diligence is, by its very nature, necessary for other stages during the life of a project (like securing insurance, permits and licenses).
