Anaerobic digestion is a series of biological processes in which microorganisms break down some biodegradable material like biomass or waste feedstock like animal manure, wastewater biosolids, food wastes, industrial waste, and other waste materials that were previously headed for landfills. There are many microorganisms that can affect anaerobic digestion, including acetic acid-forming bacteria called “acetogens” and methane-forming archaea called “methanogens”. These organisms promote a number of chemical processes which convert biomass to biogas. While anaerobic digesters, in many forms, have been around for many years, this waste-to-energy process is certainly becoming more popular worldwide as interest continues to be high in improving existing technologies and developing new ones. While the implementation of anaerobic digestion systems can be expensive, the social and financial benefits of waste removal and greenhouse gas reduction, and the long life and payback, would certainly seem to justify the investment in most cases. These anaerobic digestors are energy recovery systems that capture methane gas that may have otherwise been sent into the atmosphere and allows for the displacement of fossil fuel energy use. Quite simply, anaerobic digesters produce a renewable, clean source of energy.
