What is the Bioeconomy?
While more than 40 countries have some “bioeconomy” strategy, there is really no worldwide definition. The term “bioeconomy” actually has different meanings to different people and governments. While most agree that the term includes things involving the substitution of biological resources for fossil fuels to produce electricity, fuels, and manufactured goods, the definitions (and thus the strategies) seem to vary depending on the countries’ technological capacity, its natural resource base, and its economic comparative advantage. What we do know, however, is that the definition of a bioeconomy is an evolving term that continues to change over time.
There seem to be three factors that have contributed to a recent interest in this thing called the bioeconomy. First, the advances in biological sciences and biotechnology always give us the promise of some new and valuable commercial applications. Second, substituting exhaustible fossil fuels with renewable biological resources to produce electricity, fuel, and chemical-based manufactured products has become a priority – for many reasons, including rural economic development, energy self-reliance, and climate change mitigation. Third, genetic materials continue to increasingly serve as a source of materials for new commercial compounds.
