Circular Economy Benefits
A circular economy isn’t just about fixing environmental wrongs. It brings big opportunities and positive impacts across lots of industries and lives. Right now, less than 10% of the 100 billion tons of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels are recycled and used again. A circular economy is about making better use of natural resources like forests, soil, water, air, metals, and minerals. A circular economy helps protect human health and biodiversity in so many ways, including by making better use of natural resources and mitigating the climate crisis. Every year, more than 9 million people die as a result of air, water, and soil pollution. This does not even count the animal population and biodiversity that it negatively impacts.
We know that almost half of global greenhouse gas emissions come from product use, manufacturing, and food production. Circular economy strategies reduce our use of resources and cut these greenhouse gas emissions, thus helping avert the very dangerous impacts of climate change.
Also, research has shown that the circular economy offers a huge economic opportunity by reducing waste, stimulating innovation, and creating employment. In fact, transitioning to a circular economy could create a net increase of about six million jobs in the next 7-8 years.
