Feed Co-Products in Biofuels – Protein
When we think of different biofuels co-products coming from biofuels operations, the one which immediately comes to mind is “protein feed for livestock”. With very few exceptions, all co-products arising from biofuels production have some level of protein. So, what makes one a “protein feed” and how do we classify these for our downstream feed customers? Generally, the livestock feed industry makes use of two types of protein feeds: middle proteins and high proteins. Although there are no hard-and-fast rules describing these two classes, middle protein feeds usually range from about 25 to 35 % crude protein while high protein feeds range from about 40 % and higher. A common example of a middle protein is dried distillers’ grains. A common example of a high protein is soybean meal or corn gluten meal. One factor of the price paid for co-products is the contribution of protein to the overall diet. Other factors play a role in pricing as well: for example, energy and minerals. But, for protein feeds – especially high protein – the contribution of protein is the biggest determinant.
Biofuel production facilities should employ an expert who has formal training in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and nutrition. Further, this nutritionist should have “hands-on” experience in both the biofuels industry and the livestock production industry. A good consultant will be able to help understand the co-products being produced and how to maximize their production and value. The value of co-products (and the price paid) is constantly evaluated by your downstream feed customers.
