Biofuels Consultants

What do “biofuels consultants” do?  The term “biofuels” refers to a fuel produced through a mainstream biological process like agriculture (as opposed to fuels that are produced through a geological process like coal or petroleum). Biofuels are normally derived directly from plants, or indirectly from agricultural, commercial, domestic, and/or industrial wastes. Biodiesel and ethanol are two examples of biofuels.  Biofuels are replacements for petroleum-derived fossil fuels.  They are derived from biomass and made via processes that meet lifecycle requirements to meet the definition so reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

A biofuel expert or consultant is someone who has a significant background in this area through education and experience.  An expert in biofuel has a wide range of expertise in the technologies and businesses concerning the production of biofuel including the various technologies used to generate the biofuel and their relative strengths and weaknesses.  These include fermentation of cellulosic materials, gasification, pyrolysis, extraction of oil from algae, and others.

The biofuel expert may assist investors in assessing and selecting the right technology and in preparing due diligence/feasibility studies and loan/grant applications.   They can assist with feedstock selection, regulatory and policy guidance, tax incentives, and RIN creation, registration, and sale.  They can assist with lifecycle analysis and help determine greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.  Biofuel consultants follow the biofuel market and have experience with the current state of supply, demand, and pricing.  They are familiar with renewable fuel mandates credits and other regulations.  They understand fuel specifications for blending and how they achieve them.   They know many of the key players in the industry and can assist with market analysis and business development.   During design, the biofuel expert may perform a peer review of the design, prepare cost opinions, and assist with permit applications.  During construction, the biofuel expert can assist with construction oversight of the biofuel facility and provide commissioning reports. They may also provide operator training, start-up assistance, and recipe management to assist biofuel plant owners in making the plant run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. In matters involving biofuel litigation, the consultant may serve as an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the processes and related technical issues and may testify in court about aspects of biofuel technology and related matters.

In short, a biofuel consultant can provide the specialized knowledge to help clients make informed decisions, address challenges, and maximize a project’s potential. For more than 25 years, Lee Enterprises Consulting has been at the forefront of the bioeconomy.
