The World Bank forecasts that the global MSW will increase to about 3.4 billion tons by 2050. Per capita, about 0.5 kilograms of waste is generated per day in low-income countries like Africa, while the high-income countries generate more than four times that much.

Much of the municipal solid waste can be reused, and while recovering energy from waste is a good idea, older systems like incineration are often inappropriate due to the generation of toxic gases into the air.
