USDA Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) Funding Overview
Funding Program: USDA Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)
Funding Agency: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
Total Funding Available: Approximately $1 billion for new contracts and renewals
Application Window: Continuous sign-up; first national batching deadline January 15, 2026
The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) is a USDA NRCS program that provides financial and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers who maintain existing conservation practices and adopt additional activities that improve environmental performance across their entire operation.
Program Overview
CSP is designed to support whole-farm conservation by rewarding producers for actively managing and maintaining baseline conservation efforts while expanding and improving them over time. Unlike practice-by-practice programs, CSP emphasizes comprehensive stewardship across working lands.
CSP contracts provide annual payments to participating producers, helping improve farm profitability while strengthening long-term agricultural resilience and environmental outcomes.
Conservation Activities Supported
CSP supports a wide range of conservation activities and enhancements, including those
that improve:
- Soil health and erosion control
- Water quality and water use efficiency
- Nutrient and manure management
- Air quality and emissions reduction
- Wildlife habitat and biodiversity
- Climate resilience and adaptive management
Cost Sharing Requirements
No cost sharing is required under the Conservation Stewardship Program.
CSP provides direct annual payments to participants based on the level of conservation performance and enhancements implemented.
All CSP contracts include a minimum annual payment of $4,000.
Eligible Applicants
CSP is available to farmers and ranchers managing agricultural or forest production land, including:
- Cropland
- Rangeland
- Grassland
- Pasture
- Forest production land
Application Timing
CSP applications are accepted on a continuous sign-up basis. NRCS uses national and state-level batching periods to evaluate and fund applications.
The first national funding round deadline is January 15, 2026, with additional rounds announced in the future.

How LEC Partners Supports CSP Participants
LEC Partners supports producers and project sponsors evaluating how CSP participation aligns with broader operational, funding, and sustainability objectives.
- Assess program fit and alignment with stewardship goals
- Support technical feasibility of conservation enhancements
- Evaluate operational impacts and implementation risks
- Coordinate CSP participation with broader funding and financing strategies
Our work is grounded in independent analysis and real-world experience across agriculture, bioeconomy, and resource-based projects.
Questions We Commonly Address
How is CSP different from EQIP?
CSP focuses on maintaining and enhancing existing conservation systems across an entire operation, while EQIP typically supports the adoption of specific new conservation practices.
Does CSP support regenerative agriculture practices?
Many CSP enhancements align with regenerative principles such as soil health improvement, reduced inputs, and adaptive management.
When should producers evaluate CSP participation?
Early evaluation helps producers understand eligibility, expected payments, and how CSP fits within long-term operational and funding strategies.
