Technologies to Valorize Renewable Resources
As renewable resources like waste wood, agricultural waste, or municipal solid waste (MSW) are available at scattered sites in small amounts (as compared to petroleum), the question always arises as to technologies best suited to valorize these resources. As renewable energy experts, the top four technologies we currently see in this arena are:
- Gasification: This technology converts organic materials into synthesis gas, a combustible gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide, that can be used to produce chemicals or fuels, or generate electricity or heat.
- Steam reforming: Similar to gasification, but conducted with the steam present, the material is converted to a synthesis gas that is an intermediate to chemicals, and fuels, or can be combusted for heat or to generate electricity.
- Anaerobic Digestion: This technology breaks down organic matter biochemically by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, which can be used to generate renewable natural gas, electricity, or heat.
- Pyrolysis: This technology uses heat to break down organic materials into a crude oil-type liquid that can be substituted for crude oil as a feedstock for fuels or chemicals.
Each of these has an appropriate use and in the right circumstances, is the best choice. In evaluating which to use, it is always best to get the advice of experienced professionals.
