What is a Surfactant? The term “Surfactant” is a contraction of the term surface-active agent. A Surfactant is a substance that, when present even at very low levels in a system, has the property of absorbing onto the surfaces or interfaces in the system and altering their interfacial free energies in dramatic ways. Surfactants help you wash dirt off of your hands and remove stains from your clothing in the laundry. They allow paints to coat surfaces without beading up or dripping off. They help emulsify grease away from your cookware in the dishwasher. They help your lungs fill with air properly, and they help herbicides “wet” the surfaces of weeds to help crops grow better.
What is a surfactant expert? A Surfactant expert or a Surfactant consultant is someone who has significant background in this area, through education and/or experience. They may have degrees in Chemistry or Surface Science. The Surfactant expert may assist clients/investors in selecting the right surfactant for applications including detergents, dishwashing, coatings, adhesives, polymer foams, defoaming applications, demolding, polymer latexes, agricultural adjuvants, personal care formulations and the like. In matters involving Surfactant litigation, the consultant may serve an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the chemistries and products involved and related technical issues and may testify in court about Surfactant technology, economics and related matters.
Examples of clients who might require the assistance of a Surfactant expert are companies that are in the businesses of household, industrial and institutional cleaning services, laundry detergent products, personal care products, agricultural pesticide formulations, mining, dish soap products, gasoline additives, lubricants, metal working, enhanced oil recovery, textile treatment products, environmental remediation, paint and coating products, baking and aqueous polymer disperions or latexes.
