What does a hydroprocessing expert or hydroprocessing consultant do? Hydroprocessing refers to any of several chemical engineering processes including hydrogenation, hydrocracking, and hydrotreating, especially as part of biofuels or oil refining. Hydroprocessing experts can design processes using hydrogen to upgrade biofuels and renewable chemicals. Hydroprocessing is used to remove oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen from biomass-derived feeds and renewables to produce drop-in feeds. A consultant can aid in the selection of appropriate catalysts, predict yields and hydrogen use, review or design process flow schemes, and estimate process costs. Particularly important is understanding the effects of process unconventional feeds like biomass. There are three main types of hydrotreating: The naphtha hydrotreater treats heavy naphtha before it is fed to the reformer, the kerosene hydrotreater treats kerosene to remove sulfur and to improve smoke point properties for jet fuel, and the distillate hydrotreater treats diesel blendstocks to remove sulfur and nitrogen and raise cetane.
