Fuel cells use the chemical energy of hydrogen or other fuels to cleanly and efficiently produce electricity. If hydrogen is the fuel, the only products are electricity, water, and heat, i.e., they convert hydrogen to electricity while emitting only water vapor. While carmakers chased fuel cells more than twenty years ago, the concept is back and looks to have good momentum. Part of the renewed interest is that using hydrogen to replace fossil fuels in heavy industries, such as steelmaking, reduces carbon emissions and boosts energy security by reducing the dependency on natural gas. “Green hydrogen” can be made with renewable energy in devices that use electricity to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. Oil companies appear favorable toward hydrogen also, as the “blue hydrogen” can be made cleanly from natural gas, minimizing methane leaks and allowing carbon emissions to be captured and sequestered.
