Hydrogen applications and uses are many and varied. As countries and companies move to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to clean energy, hydrogen is increasingly the solution of choice. Green hydrogen from renewable sources holds the fantastic potential to reduce the carbon intensity of fuels, power production, transportation, chemicals, and other economically important applications. While the potential is excellent, so are the challenges, which is why it is critical to consult with experts before investing in or taking on a new hydrogen project.
We will never run out of hydrogen, the universe’s most abundant element. On plant Earth, it is mainly found bound to oxygen (in water) and carbon (in hydrocarbons), and production requires specialized equipment and significant energy input. Hydrogen also presents several unique compression, storage, transportation, and use challenges. The small size of hydrogen molecules and material compatibility issues must be considered when selecting compressors, storage tanks, pipelines, and other critical equipment and infrastructure, and using hydrogen in existing equipment, such as gas turbines, requires precise modifications.
Hydrogen has many applications, including hydroprocessing (using green hydrogen to remove impurities and lower the carbon intensity of renewable fuels as well as conventional petroleum products, blending hydrogen with natural gas for power production and process heating and cooling, fuel cells for vehicles, as a reducing agent for metals like steel, sustainable aviation fuel, energy storage, power generation, industrial processes like ammonia and ethanol production, heating and cooling, blending with natural gas, and agricultural applications like ammonia production for fertilizers. These are just some of the many applications of renewable hydrogen. As renewable energy sources become more prevalent and the hydrogen infrastructure continues to develop, renewable hydrogen use will continue to expand, contributing to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a sustainable energy future.
