As an example, entrained flow gasifiers with significant biomass pretreatment requirements, large single train capacity, high H2+CO content syngas and high specific oxygen usage, such as the ThyssenKrupp Prenflo gasifier, are best suited for large capacity centralized biomass to liquids (BtL) plants, possibly with satellite biomass pretreatment units. Another example would be dual fluidized bed, indirectly heated gasifiers such as the Repotec, IHI, and Milena technologies, with their limited single train capacity, minimal feed pretreatment requirements, high CH4 content syngas, and no oxygen requirement are better suited to small to medium-sized renewable natural gas (RNG) projects.
After producing a shortlist of potential gasification technologies, based on the project scale, feedstock(s), and end product(s), the next task is to match the project risk tolerance with the technology readiness level (TRL) of the available technologies. In most cases, a commercial project will require that the gasification technology has been demonstrated successfully at scale, with a significant number of operating hours, and for relevant feedstocks and conditions.
