Program Overview

The EPA FY 2026 Brownfield Cleanup Grants program provides funding to support cleanup activities at eligible brownfield sites owned by the applicant. The program is administered by EPA’s Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization and is intended to help communities address contamination while enabling sustainable reuse of impacted properties.

Cleanup Grants are designed to move projects from assessment to action by funding remediation activities that reduce environmental risk and support redevelopment, revitalization, and community reuse goals.


Scope of Funded Activities

EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grants may be used to address contamination at one or more eligible brownfield sites. Applicants may request funding for cleanup activities related to hazardous substances and/or petroleum contamination.

Applicants may submit only one Cleanup Grant application in the FY 2026 competition cycle.


Funding Levels

  • Up to $500,000 to clean up one brownfield site or to allocate funding across multiple sites
  • $500,001 to $4,000,000 to clean up one brownfield site or to allocate funding across multiple sites

Applicants must clearly identify the site or sites included in the application. Alternate sites may not be substituted if EPA determines a proposed site to be ineligible.


Cost Sharing Requirements

There is no cost share requirement under the EPA FY 2026 Brownfield Cleanup Grants program.


Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to:

  • General purpose units of local government
  • Land clearance authorities or quasi-governmental entities operating under local government supervision
  • Government entities created by state legislatures
  • Regional councils or councils of governments
  • State-chartered redevelopment agencies
  • States
  • Federally recognized Indian Tribes (excluding Alaska Native Tribes, except the Metlakatla Indian Community)

Site Ownership Requirements

To be eligible, the applicant must be the sole owner of the brownfield site or sites included in the Cleanup Grant application. Ownership of the site(s) must be established by January 28, 2026.
