Emerging Technologies

What are the emerging technologies in the bioeconomy? The industry for the conversion of biomass, wastes, and other alternative materials to end-use products such as chemicals, fuels, and power is indeed a wide and diverse example. There are literally thousands of companies engaged in this endeavor using many different approaches. There are also new processes yet to be developed, so competing in this space will require an ongoing effort to monitor the development of new companies and processes.  The best renewable energy and biochemical consulting firms have experts in a wide variety of bioeconomy specialties, including all types of alternative energy and energy consultants.   These firms should also have experts in renewable fuels like ethanol fuel and diesel biodiesel, synthetic diesel, renewable chemicals, renewable electricity, biomass energy, feedstocks, biomass technologies, bio-products, and all areas of sustainability, synthetic biology, emerging technologies, and waste management, as well as even more specialized things like algae biofuel, agitation systems, agricultural waste, bio-oils, bio-jet fuel, carbon accreditation, carbon capture, carbon credits, climate change analysis, emerging technologies, environmental permitting, enzyme technologies, feedstock due diligence, financial due diligence, and glycerin related matters.  They should have teams of experts for all types of clean energy, green energy, renewable energy finance, and renewables and should be able to provide expertise for projects and be available to serve as expert witnesses in matters within the bioeconomy.

A structured set of guidelines can be used for assessing a broad range of companies and technologies involved in the industry of biomass and alternative feedstock conversion to fuels and chemicals. Just like the road map is intended to guide travelers to their desired destination, these guidelines can be employed to find specific companies and/or technology pathways that best meet the desires and objectives of the industrial navigator by (i) defining a starting point, (ii) adequately defining the present landscape, as well as looking ahead to potential developments and (iii) defining a final objective or destination.

While the renewable fuel and chemical markets span several decades, there are many more new companies and technologies seeking to establish their niches than there are viable commercial businesses. In that sense, market opportunity abounds. Conversely, the likelihood of failure of innovative technology companies is high and these opportunities must be critically assessed. In addition to recognizing technological advantages and potential, valid assessments need to account for issues that can undermine success.
