Coal has historically been used to supply electricity, with most burned at coal-fired power plants. Coal gasification is a newer thermo-chemical process in which the gasifier’s heat and pressure break down coal into basic chemical components and turn it into a synthetic natural gas called syngas. While syngas can be produced from many other sources such as natural gas, biomass, or virtually any hydrocarbon feedstock, their production from coal is well documented. Syngas is a critical resource in the production of hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and synthetic hydrocarbon fuels. It can also be used in the production of synthetic petroleum used as a fuel or lubricant. The primary process that does the conversion is the Fischer-Tropsch process.
Large renewable energy and biochemical consulting firms certainly have experts in biotechnologies, as well as the more common areas like bio and renewable fuels, biomass and biomass power, feedstocks, biomaterials, and biochemicals. These larger groups will also have expertise in other technologies like agitation systems, anaerobic digestion, bio-oil extraction, bioreactors, carbon capture, carbon storage, carbonization, catalysis, cellulosic ethanol, cleantech, direct combustion, enzyme technologies, fermentation, Fischer-Tropsch, gasification, genetic engineering, hydrothermal, nanotechnology, organosynthesis, power generation, pyrolysis, renewable technology due diligence, synthetic biology, thermochemical conversion, torrefaction, water treatment, and waste management.
