Large renewable energy and biochemical consulting firms have bioenergy experts in many different specialties within the bioeconomy. These alternative energy and energy consulting groups and their consultants have expertise in renewable fuels (ethanol, cellulosic ethanol, biodiesel, and synthetic diesel), renewable chemicals, renewable electricity, biomass energy, synthetic biology, biomass technologies (conventional and emerging), waste management, carbon related matters (carbon accreditation, carbon capture, carbon credits), and in the many bioproducts produced. At Lee Enterprises Consulting we have experts in all these areas, as well as specialists in matters like algae biofuel, agitation systems, agricultural waste, waste management, bio oils, bio jet fuel, biogas, climate change analysis, environmental permitting, enzyme technologies, renewable due diligence, and glycerin related matters. In small projects, we have just the right expert. In larger projects, we can assemble interdisciplinary teams, with one point of contact, to handle virtually any clean energy, green energy, renewable energy, energy finance, or any other renewable related matter, and many of our experts are available to serve as expert witnesses in bioeconomy litigation.
What does a bioenergy expert or bioenergy consultant do? First, let’s define bioenergy. By definition, bioenergy is the energy extracted from biomass as it is used as a fuel. So, in a narrow sense, we think of bioenergy as biofuels – fuels derived from biological sources. In a broader sense, bioenergy includes the biomass, or the biological material used as a biofuel, and the economic, scientific and technical fields associated with using these biological sources for energy. When we think of biomass, we think of any organic renewable energy source that includes materials such as agriculture and forest residues, energy crops, and algae. As a fuel, biomass would include wood, wood waste, straw, manure, sugarcane, and many other by-products from a variety of agricultural process.
The term “bioenergy expert” actually covers many different types of experts, such as biofuels, biodiesel, ethanol, biomass energy, waste-to-energy, biogas, solid waste management and industrial waste management – just to name a few. Each will have the education and experience within their particular specialty. The services a bioenergy expert provides are as varied as the specialty areas they serve. They might assist investors in selecting the right bioenergy technology and in preparing due diligence/feasibility studies and loan/grant applications. During design, the bioenergy expert may perform a peer review of the design, or prepare cost opinions and assist with permit applications. During construction, the bioenergy expert might assist with construction oversight of the specific type of facility and provide commissioning reports. They may also provide operator training, start-up assistance and management to assist in making the facilities run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. In matters involving bioenergy litigation, the consultant may serve an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the processes and related technical issues and may testify in court about bioenergy technology, economics and related matters.
Look at our experts and the services we provide. Most of our experts are also available to advise and serve as expert witnesses in bioeconomy litigation matters. For the larger projects, we specialize in putting together full service, interdisciplinary teams with one point of contact. See video about LEC here.
