Landfill Management
Landfills are facilities designed for the disposal of solid waste and landfill management to insure their safe and efficient operation is of great importance to everyone. There are many types of landfills: Municipal Solid Waste Landfills (including bioreactor landfills), Industrial Waste Landfills (including construction and demolition debris landfills), and Hazardous Waste Landfills.
Whether these facilities are receiving nonhazardous wastes like household and organic wastes, institutional or industrial wastes from construction, coal or other components, or hazardous wastes, they are governed by many state and federal regulations and should be managed by professionals so that human health and environmental concerns are addressed.
Experts who assist in landfill management and treatment will likely have advanced degrees in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical or related Engineering, Environmental Science, or Biochemistry. The expert should also have experience in the waste industry and have a good familiarity with waste remediation, bioreactors, landfill gas optimization, leachate treatment, and environmental permitting. These experts should also have experience in evaluating and permitting waste conversion technologies such as digesters, gasification, pyrolysis, and plasma arc technologies for the conversion of MSW to energy, fuels and chemicals or products of higher value.
These landfill management and treatment experts will be able to assist clients in alternative technologies extending landfill life, optimizing of landfill gas production for renewable energy and assisting in creating revenue by conversion of waste to fuels and chemicals of higher value.
Large renewable energy and biochemical consulting firms certainly have experts in biotechnologies, as well as the more common areas like bio and renewable fuels, biomass and biomass power, feedstocks, biomaterials, and biochemicals. These larger groups will also have expertise in other technologies like agitation systems, anaerobic digestion, beverage fermentation, bio-oil extraction, bioreactors, carbon capture, carbon storage, carbonization, catalysis, cellulosic ethanol, cleantech, combined heat and power, direct combustion, enzyme technologies, fermentation, Fischer-Tropsch, gasification, genetic engineering, hydrothermal, nanotechnology, organosynthesis, power generation, pyrolysis, renewable technology due diligence, synthetic biology, thermochemical conversion, torrefaction, water treatment, and waste management.
