Bio-Based Solvents
Bio-based solvents are typically produced from biomass feedstocks like sugar, starch, cellulose, vegetable oils, or lignin, which can be replenished through agriculture or forestry, making them a sustainable choice. Bio-based solvents have a range of applications across various industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, coatings, and cleaning products.
Some bio-based solvents have lower volatility, producing fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with air pollution. Most bio-based solvents are biodegradable, reducing the environmental impact released into ecosystems.
Bio-based solvents can serve as components in eco-friendly paints, coatings, and varnishes, replace traditional solvents in adhesive formulations, and provide environmentally friendly cleaning solutions, and many are found in cosmetics and personal care items. Some bio-based solvents are suitable for pharmaceutical processes and drug formulation, while others are employed in various chemical reactions and processes. Common bio-based solvents include ethanol (derived from plant-based sources), acetone (produced via fermentation), and limonene (extracted from citrus peels).
Bio-based solvents are part of the broader shift toward sustainable and environmentally responsible practices in various industries. Their adoption can contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of processes and products while promoting the use of renewable resources.
