Biomass Pyrolysis

In countries around the globe, biomass pyrolysis is increasingly being used to convert useless waste into useful fuel and other materials. Pyrolysis of biomass—an ancient technique that applies high heat to organic materials, decomposing them into something else entirely (such as the charred wood that various civilizations have created and utilized over the centuries)—has in recent decades been supercharged by various advances in technology. It is being used to convert waste wood, animal waste, human waste, and other biomass into a useable, renewable liquid fuel.

In community after community across the world, pyrolysis is being used with materials that range from sawdust, nutshells, and animal waste to prairie grasses. In India, for example, several plants are converting millions of scrapped tires into pyrolysis oil, also known as bio-oil, for use as furnace oil and industrial diesel fuel. As an example, one company is applying pyrolysis technology to turn wastewater treatment sludge into gas, oil, and fertilizer.  In the United States, pyrolysis is finally maturing as a commercial technology and is the simplest and lowest-cost option for converting biomass to fuels, chemicals, and other useful products. Markets for the products from biomass pyrolysis are emerging and more technology providers are moving from the demonstration to the commercial scale.  The oil produced from this process is easily stored and transported but has not been appropriate for wide-scale commercial use up until now as a general fuel because of its lower quality and the fact that it is not yet economically competitive. But some are predicting that continuing efforts to develop techniques to upgrade pyrolysis oil for use as an engine fuel, suggest that pyrolysis oil can someday be an alternative fuel with broad commercial applicability.
