Wastewater Plant Energy Balance

Wastewater treatment plants are significant energy consumers, with energy input being the electricity, fuel, and chemicals required for plant operation, and energy output being biogas, heat, and electricity produced by the plant. If the energy output is greater than the energy input, the plant is said to be energy positive. To reduce net energy consumption, wastewater facility owners and operators are implementing energy conservation measures and exploring options for energy production.  For example, anaerobic digestion of biosolids produces biogas that can be used for power generation or as a natural gas supplement. A wastewater treatment and biogas expert can help improve the energy balance and operating costs of existing facilities or plan for efficient new ones.  While energy conservation measures are always a good first step at any facility, the production of surplus energy can be an option at some facilities designed correctly.
