Water treatment is any process that improves the quality of water to make it more acceptable for some specific end-use, including drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, river flow maintenance, water recreation, and more – including water being safely returned to the environment. Water treatment encompasses broad categories including municipal water, beverage, ultrapure (like medical & pharmaceutical), marine/aquarium/aquaculture, process water (for industrial and reuse), wastewater ( municipal, industrial reuse, and disposal), and remediation. Activated carbon is an effective treatment option for most of these applications and is applied in numerous ways from standalone units to multi-stage chemical and mechanical treatment processes. Choosing the most effective activated carbon product for a given water stream requires knowledge of activated carbon properties and post-production treatment processes to ensure that the proper product is chosen for a given application. Also, when incorporating activated carbon into new and existing processes, an understanding of treatment processes and end-user requirements is necessary to maximize efficiency and efficacy.
A water treatment consultant or expert is someone who has a significant background in the area, through education and/or experience. They typically have degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry or specific expertise in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or materials science. During their careers they may be involved in designing, manufacturing, testing, scaling up, analyzing, or commercializing water treatment plants and processes. The water treatment consultant or expert may assist clients in evaluating water treatment processes or plants and can assist in selecting the right technology or vendor. The water treatment expert may also assist in preparing due diligence/feasibility studies and loan/grant applications. During plant construction, the water treatment consultant may assist with construction oversight of the facility and provide commissioning reports. They may also provide operator training, start-up assistance, and management to assist in making the facilities run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. In matters involving water treatment litigation, the consultant may serve as an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the processes and related technical issues and may testify in court about water treatment technology, performance, compositions, and related matters.
