USDA Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) Funding Overview

Program Overview

CSP is designed to support whole-farm conservation by rewarding producers for actively managing and maintaining baseline conservation efforts while expanding and improving them over time. Unlike practice-by-practice programs, CSP emphasizes comprehensive stewardship across working lands.

CSP contracts provide annual payments to participating producers, helping improve farm profitability while strengthening long-term agricultural resilience and environmental outcomes.

Conservation Activities Supported

CSP supports a wide range of conservation activities and enhancements, including those
that improve:

• Soil health and erosion control
• Water quality and water use efficiency
• Nutrient and manure management
• Air quality and emissions reduction
• Wildlife habitat and biodiversity
• Climate resilience and adaptive management

Cost Sharing Requirements

No cost sharing is required under the Conservation Stewardship Program.

CSP provides direct annual payments to participants based on the level of conservation performance and enhancements implemented.

All CSP contracts include a minimum annual payment of $4,000.

Eligible Applicants

CSP is available to farmers and ranchers managing agricultural or forest production land, including:

• Cropland
• Rangeland
• Grassland
• Pasture
• Forest production land

Application Timing

CSP applications are accepted on a continuous sign-up basis. NRCS uses national and state-level batching periods to evaluate and fund applications.

The first national funding round deadline is January 15, 2026, with additional rounds announced in the future.
