USDA Forest Service’s Hazardous Fuels Transportation Program
OPPORTUNITY:
Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance grants support projects that remove hazardous fuels from national forests and grasslands to locations where the woody materials may be used for various wood products and services. The work contributes to reducing hazardous fuels that pose wildfire threats to communities, critical infrastructure and recreation areas. while supporting local forest product facilities and rural economies.
DESCRIPTION:
Unlike high-value wood, which is typically used in construction and furniture manufacturing, low-value wood has more limited applications, with fewer facilities able to process it into useful products like soil-enriching materials, renewable energy sources like electricity and heat, and sustainable construction solutions such as cross-laminated timber. The Hazardous Fuels Transportation Program aims to help eligible applicants make use of the dead trees, fallen branches, and dense undergrowth which would go to waste or fuel catastrophic wildfires.
Projects must:
• Remove hazardous materials from and/or demonstrate direct benefit to National Forest System Lands
• Explain how and why it reduces hazardous fuels, and
• Describe and provide documentation showing why transportation of the hazardous fuels to facility locations where they can be utilized or processed (e.g. mills etc.) is the limiting factor in removal.
