Dr. Mezzari brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective with a career spanning over 20 years in environmental engineering and biological sciences. Her expertise encompasses phytoremediation, bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and biofuel production, with a strong focus on applied research and practical implementation. Dr. Mezzari’s background in fundamental biology (cell and molecular) informs her applied research, focusing on the role of microbial communities. Her work has included developing pilot-scale wastewater treatment systems using microalgae for both water treatment and biomass production, as well as assessing the impact of environmental pollutants on soil microbial communities. Her recent work also explores the potential of biological systems for carbon sequestration and utilization, underscoring her commitment to addressing climate change through innovative solutions.
With experience at both academic and industrial institutions, Dr. Mezzari has led and managed numerous complex projects, including microbiome analysis in cancer patients and environmental settings. She has consistently translated scientific research into practical applications, including the implementation of pilot plants for wastewater treatment and biomass production, the development of educational content, and the translation of basic research findings to industry. Dr. Mezzari’s expertise also includes a decade of academic teaching and mentoring experience. As a dynamic and results-oriented leader, she excels at building effective teams, developing innovative strategies, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve sustainable solutions.
