Dr. Muhammad Ferhan is a seasoned industrial biotechnology professional with over 20 years of experience in bioenergy, bioprocess optimization, and sustainable innovation. He specializes in technology evaluation, process scale-up, and industrial application of innovative biotechnological solutions.
Dr. Ferhan’s career spans diverse roles in academia and industry, reflecting his versatility and commitment to sustainability. As a Bioenergy & Biotechnology Consultant at Stealth B&B in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he has been instrumental in developing emission-free solutions that integrate biological systems with advanced technologies.
Previously, he held a prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowship with Suncor Energy Inc. and Toronto Metropolitan University, where he advanced research on lignin-based bio-oil hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) for bio-jet fuel production. His work encompassed designing and troubleshooting industrial processes, developing process flow diagrams (PFDs), performing lifecycle assessments, and conducting SWOT analyses to enhance bioreactor systems’ efficiency and scalability.
In academia, Dr. Ferhan served as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Applied Molecular Biology (CAMB), University of the Punjab, where he mentored graduate students and spearheaded innovative research initiatives. His Ph.D. research at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Biocomposites & Biomaterials Processing (CBBP) focused on lignocellulosic green biotechnology and bark biorefinery, underscoring his commitment to sustainable development.
Dr. Ferhan has held impactful research roles at esteemed institutions such as Ryerson University, York University, and the National Institute for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (NIBGE). His achievements include optimizing industrial bioprocesses and microbial strain improvements, developing pharmaceutical enzymes and advancing biomass (lignin) valorization techniques, and conducting in-depth studies on ethanol production, bio-jet fuels, and biochemicals derived from sustainable resources.
Dr. Ferhan’s has been recognized with prestigious accolades such as the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology during his Ph.D. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals, reinforcing his reputation as a leader in biotechnology innovation.
