Renewable Diesel Outlook
Renewable diesel turns waste into clean fuel. As compared to fossil fuel (diesel), renewable diesel (RD) has great potential as it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the lifecycle of the fuel. Although often considered similarly, renewable diesel and biodiesel are not the same. They do use similar feedstocks, but they are produced very differently and have different chemical properties. RD is produced through a hydrotreating process where adding hydrogen allows oxygen to be extracted. This makes RD a more stable fuel in extremely cold temperatures and prevents microbial corrosion during its storage in fuel tanks. RD also seems to provide better ignitions, and very importantly, can be used straight out of the pump rather than blended.
The renewable diesel supply is expected to multiply by 5x over the next few years. Europe currently produces about 50% of the total RD supply. North America is expected to produce enough RD to satisfy its needs over the next five years. While California and Oregon were the early pioneers here, the rest of the U.S. is moving very fast toward the switch to renewable diesel and Canada is becoming a very active player in the industry.
