The SBIR and STTR programs offer competitively awarded grants to small businesses to support scientific excellence and technological innovation. These programs, administered by Office of Science, engage with diverse small businesses and entrepreneurs to develop innovative and cutting-edge technologies to help accelerate to a clean energy future. DOE recognizes the important role small businesses play in driving innovative research and technology development.
The SBIR/STTR Program is supporting 45 different research topics across its three technology sectors: transportation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. The topics funded by the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) will advance its mission to develop and demonstrate technologies to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the cost-effective, sustainable use of biomass and waste feedstocks across the U.S. economy.
Phase I applications evaluate, insofar as possible, the scientific or technical merit and feasibility of ideas that appear to have commercial potential and/or substantial application in support of DOE mission research. The grant application should concentrate on research that will contribute to proving scientific or technical feasibility of the approach or concept.

MATCHING/ COST SHARING FUNDS:
Cost sharing under this FOA is not required. However, any commercial contribution will be considered as part of the evaluation.
FUNDING AVAILABLE AND APPLICATION WINDOW:
FUNDING AVAILABILITY: Phase I grants have a maximum award size of $200,000 or $250,000. Refer to the individual topic for its respective maximum award size.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Letters of Intent are due no later than February 2, 2024, at 5:00 pm ET, and application submissions are due no later than March 12, 2024, at 11:59 pm ET.
