Biogas is a renewable energy source that is produced by anaerobic digestion, where anaerobic organisms breakdown the organic materials, or by the fermentation of biodegradable materials. Biogas can refer to any of a wide range of gases produced from biological sources including municipal wastewater sludge, animal manures, agricultural wastes, food waste or other organic sources. Biogas can be utilized in power production, as a heat source or upgraded to pipeline quality renewable natural gas.
What does a biogas expert do? A biogas expert or biogas consultant is someone who has significant background in this area, through education and/or experience. An expert in biogas has a wide range of expertise in the technologies and businesses concerning the production and upgrading of these gases produced from renewable resources.
The biogas expert may assist investors in selecting the right biogas technology and in preparing due diligence/feasibility studies and loan/grant applications. During design, the biogas expert may perform a peer review of the design, prepare cost opinions and assist with permit applications. During construction, the biogas expert can assist with construction oversight of the biogas facility and provide commissioning reports. They may also provide operator training, start-up assistance and recipe management to assist biogas plant owners in making the plant run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. In matters involving biogas litigation, the consultant may serve an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the biogas processes and related technical issues and may testify in court about aspects of biogas technology and related matters.
