International Liaisons

Africa (Chibi Tayaka)

Chibi holds a BEng in Chemical Engineering, and an MSc and Ph.D. in Energy & Environment from The University of Leeds.  She has been involved in the production, characterization, and modification of waste-derived biochars and hydrochars for soil/compost and wastewater nutrient management. Chibi has also explored the potential for ammonia gas abatement from source using waste-derived biomass feedstocks. With an interest in African bio-economies, she is interested in delivering sustainable, cost-effective waste management strategies across various developing cities.

Africa (Jonathan Lewis)

Jonathan has a B.S. in Physics and Engineering from Deree-Pierce University in Athens (Greece) and forty years of international flying experience. He has more than 17,000 hours of Pilot-in-Command, heavy, multi-engine turbine time (Jumbo-jet experience, including the Boeing B-747-200F).  He has participated in the development of Renewable Jet Fuels and is one of the discoverers of the benefits of a new Renewable Jet fuel with heavier carbon molecules.  Jonathan has extensive logistics experience and has helped deploy biofuels both nationally and internationally. He has also helped to launch new biofuels like renewable methanol from renewable natural gas and is an active proponent of 3rd/4th generation biofuels technology.  He is actively involved in development of cellulosic diesel technologies.

Asia - China & Far East (Stuart Buckingham)

Stuart received his Biotechnology Degree (BSc. Hons) from De Montfort University Leicester, UK.   Stuart is  is a widely skilled practitioner in alternative fuels operations and technologies and an expert in the design, construction and operation of used cooking oil (UCO) based bio-energy plants on three continents.   As co-founder of Uptown Biodiesel in London, Stuart created one of the most successful biodiesel companies in the UK and was involved in the joint development of a biodiesel CHP plant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers new 12 story headquarters in London. This propelled the Uptown Biodiesel business into the limelight in 2010, winning it the coveted ‘UK Green Business of the Year Award’ in 2011. Stuart lives with his family in Shanghai, China and directs our China and Far East projects

Asia - Southeast (John Diecker)

John holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and an MS degree in Environmental Engineering from  the University of Missouri–Rolla along with an MS degree in International Business Administration from Kennedy-Western University.  He has thirty eight years of experience in the electric power generation and transmission industry with over three decades of that experience in Southeast Asia.  John has served as a technical, project management and project development consultant to power project owners, developers and contractors.  He has consulted extensively to governments, state-owned enterprises, financial institutions and insurance firms.   John has been involved with many types of renewable energy projects and his experience with biomass includes virtually all stages of project development from site selection, engineering, feasibility studies, fuel availability studies, environmental and community impact review, licensing, permitting and construction supervision through operations & maintenance.  He has particular expertise with grid connection and system integration issues.  John is a Senior Member of IEEE and Managing Director of APT Consulting Group Co., Ltd., a Thailand-based engineering, planning and consulting firm.

Australia/Pacific Rim (Paul Martin)

Paul is one of the founders of the biodiesel industry in Australia.  He has over 15 years’ experience in every aspect of biodiesel production –  plant and process troubleshooting, plant design, testing and construction, research and development, feasibility studies, plant commissioning and staff training, biodiesel training courses, preparation of manuals, equipment modification, and salvage/redesign.  Paul has been involved in over 80% of the biodiesel plants in Australia, and worked in the industry in 12 other countries. Paul owns Australian consultancy firm, GrownFuel, and serves as our liaison in the Pacific Rim and Oceania.

Central America & Caribbean (Damiana Serafini)

Damiana has a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture and Resource Economics from the University of Connecticut, and is currently pursuing an MBA at the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology (Instituto Technologico de Buenos Aires – ITBA). Her work includes more than 17 years of experience in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), including feedstock production and selection, processing technology, supply chain, quality and sustainability certification, policy, and carbon trading schemes.  She has collaborated with IATA on quantifying the challenges associated with adopting a sustainability certification standard for biofuel production. Damiana also leads the development of a strategic roadmap for the successful deployment of SAF for aviation for Trinidad and Tobago in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization, a division of the United Nations.

Damiana acquired public sector experience as the Director of General of Environment & Energy Efficiency for Vicente López County Office in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During her time in office, she developed and deployed public programs on waste management, water conservation, urban agriculture and energy efficiency. Damiana has also helped develop the biogas industry in Argentina, conducting R&D studies on the potential for power generation via anaerobic digestion processes using animal and agricultural waste as feedstock for the Province of Buenos Aires, a study funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, for the benefit of the Organismo Provincial de Desarrollo Sostenible, Argentina.

Europe - Austria (Michael Wild)

Michael is an economist and engineer by education.  He has been active in renewable energies during his 26 year professional career and is President of the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC). He pioneered biomass fired district heating systems in Austria and conversion of coal fired systems to biomass in former socialist countries.  Michael started the first internet based biomass trading platform (ABEX) in 1999, and for over a decade, led the international biomass trading company, EBES, in creating numerous intercontinental supply chains for palm kernel shell, pellets and wood chips.  Since 2007, he has been a world leader in torrefaction technology development, supporting producers and trading houses in the US, Eastern Europe, Russia and Malaysia developing their trade into Europe.

Europe - Greece (Angela Fivga)

Angela received her BEng and MEng. Mechanical Engineering (specializing in Management of Renewable Energy Resources) from the University of Western Macedonia in Greece. She received her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry from Aston University, UK. She is a mechanical and chemical engineer with a strong background in pyrolysis, biomass, plastic waste management, and thermochemical conversion technologies. Her Ph.D. thesis contributed to the EC Biosynergy project, which evaluated bio-refineries for transport fuels.  In addition her many research activities, she has experience with process design, PFD, P&ID, HAZOP and techno-economic simulations using HYSYS Aspen, and has worked on the development and optimization of both small, and large pyrolysis systems (including establishing design and operating parameters for commercial versions of prototype systems).  Her most recent work has been as the head of R&D for Recycling Technologies, where she focused on enabling mixed plastic waste to be converted to heavy fuel substitutes and refined feedstock for plastics production. 

Europe - U.K. (Zsuzsa Mayer)

Zsuzsa has an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. She is a chartered chemical engineer and scientist specializing in intermediate and fast pyrolysis, and an analytical chemist specializing in biomass characterization (energy crops, micro algae, industrial and agriculture waste etc.), bio-oil characterization (physical, chemical and fuel properties) and char characterization (both for soil and for energy applications). Zsuzsa has designed and set up cutting edge laboratories, and published several peer reviewed research papers and patents. She is a hands on expert of a very wide range of analytical instruments necessary for the effective support of R&D activities and industrial scale fuel production. Zsuzsa is an expert of several advanced statistical methods essential for pyrolysis process optimization, product upgrading and quality control. She joined the European Bioenergy Research Institute in 2009 and currently works as a Principal Analytical Chemist and Biofuel Researcher in Oxford, UK.

India (Saravanan Ramusubramanian)

Saravanan has a PhD in plant microbial biology from University of Madras, India, post-doctoral work in “omics” technology at various nationally ranked academic institutes in France and USA.  He has more than 10 years of work experience in biotechnology and renewable chemical industries. Saravanan’s knowledge and expertise in biotechnology and renewable industrial includes laboratory analyses, biofuel conversion process, cellulosic/corn ethanol, biodiesel esterification process, biocatalyst, industrial enzymes, nutraceuticals/supplements, bio based chemicals, bio lubricants, bioprocess scale up and solving biotech issues and working with engineers. Saravanan is expanding his consulting capabilities in microbiome and synthetic biology industry-specific needs and technological solutions integrating Big Data Analytics and advanced statistical methods. Saravanan has several publications and has presented at international conferences on the topic of renewables, cell biology, biochemistry and omics analysis. Saravanan also serves on scientific experts and editorial boards.

Middle East (Elham Khaghani)

Elham holds a B.Sc degree in Chemical Engineering, a M.Sc degree in Petroleum Engineering, and a PhD in Chemical engineering.  She has studied microwave pyrolysis of plastics including mathematical modelling, kinetic studies, thermochemical process design, and reactor and heat exchanger design. She is a process/chemical engineer involved in multidisciplinary projects, and supported R&D teams in biomass pyrolysis. Elham has experience in process design simulation, feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed designs, equipment sizing, engineering reviews of P&IDs, PFDs, PSFS and Hazardous area drawings, and associated reports (Basis of Design, Technical Notes and Queries, Design Reviews, HAZOPs).
