What does a Gas to Liquids (GTL) Expert or Consultant Do? Gas to liquids refers to a refining process whereby natural gas or some othe gaseous hydrocarbon is converted into a longer-chain hydrocarbons like gasoline or diesel fuel. The Fischer-Tropsch process is a popular Gas-to-Liquids technology. The conversion is a catalyzed chemical reaction in which synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, is converted into synthetic liquid biofuels (e.g., synthetic diesel, gasoline, methanol) and “green” chemicals. The composition of the final product is influenced by the syngas content (e.g., the ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide), temperature, pressure, catalyst composition. Sometimes a Waste-to-Gas technology like gasification or steam reformation can be coupled with a Gas-to-Liquids technology to produce higher value liquid synthetic fuels.
The Gas-to-Liquids technology expert has knowledge and experience in related processes, scrubbing/ cleaning system, syngas chemistry, catalyst requirements, and produced energy products. The expert can provide technical due diligence on a waste conversion into liquid fuels for investors. They may assist investors in selecting the right technology and in preparing due diligence/feasibility studies and loan/grant applications. They follow the GTL market and have experience with the current state of supply, demand, and pricing. They are familiar with renewable fuel mandates and credits and other regulations. They understand fuel specifications for blending and how the meet them. They know many of the key players in the industry. During design, the GTL expert may perform a peer review of the design, prepare cost opinions and assist with permit applications. During construction, the gas-to-liquids expert can assist with construction oversight of the facility and provide commissioning reports. They may also provide operator training, start-up assistance, and recipe management to assist GTL plant owners in making the plant run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. In matters involving gas-to-liquid litigation, the consultant may serve an expert witness and assist the attorneys with understanding the processes and related technical issues and may testify in court about aspects of GTL technology and related matters.
