Investment Due Diligence.  Every entrepreneur and investor asks the most basic questions: will it work and at what price?  A proper due diligence assessment will evaluate the technology, competitors, intellectual property landscape, regulatory environment, market outlets, spin-off potential, and commercialization strategy.

Technology Vetting.  In response to global environmental challenges, many Biomass/Waste-to-Energy/Products technologies, including gasification, pyrolysis, steam reforming, and Gas-to-Liquide technologies, all of which produce or consume significant amounts of power, are evaluated for optimization of energy and materials efficiency and economic viability.

 Plant Siting, Design, & Construction.  Develop projects to increase power generation capability by retrofitting existing generation facilities or installing new capacity.  Evaluate the impact on co-located systems and incremental power production to provide project justification.  Provide project and construction management during design, construction, commissioning, and start up.

Asset Appraisals – Biodiesel & Wood Pellet Bills – U.S. & Canada – Conducted appraisals of biodiesel plants and pellet mills.

Bioenergy Facility Site Selection – Canada – Evaluated multiple sites for suitability for biomass conversion technology. Assessment included feedstock availability, site logistics, infrastructure, and impact on project economics. Work included a combination of research, discussions with relevant parties, and inspection of potential sites.

Biomass Cogeneration Power Project – Agricultural Waste (Rice Husk) – Thailand – Project development services related to a grid connected 2 MW biomass cogeneration power project in northern Thailand. The project uses rice husk as its primary fuel source. Steam and heat are provided to an associated textile dying facility. Activities included feasibility study, fuel availability study, environmental and community impact assessment, grid connection study, preliminary design, PPA application, licensing & permitting, preparation of tender documents, contractor negotiations, construction inspection & supervision and commissioning & startup supervision.

Biomass Export Products from Forest Residues Profitably- Australia – Conducted study for biomass exports for major Australian forestry company for two regions in eastern Australia. Study detailed super-dense products appropriate for export, including black pellets and pyrolysis oil, outlined the technologies to make them and technology companies, analysed markets for these products in Japan and Europe, and described highly efficient supply chains to get product competitively to market. Assisted in selection of two prospective sites for plants and developed business cases including project economics for manufacture and export of black pellets to Japan and Europe into specific lucrative markets. Recommended potential strategic partners and outlined next steps for development.

Biomass Power Generation – Canada – Designed, engineered, and managed construction for two greenfield biomass power generation facilities based on 6.5 MW modules using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology for reduced operations and maintenance costs. The projects utilized wood residuals from sawmills and logging operations to generate clean power and heat to be used for lumber drying. The plants were the largest facilities in the world of their type when completed and are operating better than the design basis.

Business Plan – Biomass Pellet – U.S. – This SME is a start-up venture that upcycles waste agricultural products through a patented process into a solid biofuel for household and commercial heating.  The company was in a negative-cash position and was planning to expand.  We provided the design and coaching for management to prepare a business plan.

Feasibility Study – MSW Power Generation – Thailand – Project development services related to a grid-connected 6 MW thermal municipal solid waste power project in southern Thailand. The project is located at a landfill site and uses both existing and new refuse as its fuel source. Activities included technology assessment, feasibility study, fuel availability study, environmental and community impact assessment, grid connection study, preliminary design, PPA application, licensing & permitting, preparation of tender documents and contractor negotiations.

Feasibility Study – Wood Waste to Diesel Fuel – New Zealand – Prepared proposal for funding an exploratory project for development of a plant for converting woody wastes to diesel fuel and asphalt additives.   The project including preparing proposal, estimating costs and setting up demonstration using customer feeds.

Feedstock Evaluation – Biomass – – U.S. – Conducted a complete reviewed of the fuel supply to a 100 MW biomass plant for publically traded company.

Feedstock Evaluation – Biomass – Tanzania – Conducted study for tobacco company to find the availability and cost of alternative sources of biomass from dry tobacco leaves.

Plant Design & Construction – Biomass Power Generation – Canada – A decommissioned paper mill was converted to a 36 MW biomass power generation facility. Work scope included project plan development, economic assessment, structuring the project for non-recourse debt financing, construction contract negation, project management, as well as various engineering and project services.

Plant Design & Construction – Biomass Power Generation – Canada – Designed, engineered, and managed construction for two greenfield biomass power generation facilities based on 6.5 MW modules using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology for reduced operations and maintenance costs. Process Optimization – Pyrolysis –U.S. – Optimized a polymer pyrolysis process for a company focused on recovering valuable chemical building blocks and intermediates from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). With kinetic functions obtained from a combination of literature and experiment, the decomposition profile was modeled as a function of process parameters including: temperature, time, pressure, flow rates, and MSW composition. The kinetic model forms the basis of a demonstration plant under construction that will recover 4,000 tons per year of valuable chemicals.

Steam Turbine Upgrade – Canada – Developed project to increase power generation capability at a Kraft pulp mill by retrofitting existing backpressure turbines. Evaluated impact on mill steam systems and incremental power production to provide project justification. Provided project and construction management during design, construction, commissioning, and start up. Project was implemented safely, on time, and met all expectations.

Technology Development – Bio-derived Fillers into Polymers – U.S. – The incorporation of bio-derived inexpensive fillers into polymers of various kinds has been accomplished, reducing polymer cost, improving performance, reduced petroleum-derived content, and bringing new markets for biomass form invasive species and food processing and agricultural wastes

Technology Development – Biofuels – Worldwide – A novel research and development concept has been developed to optimize the development of new materials and technologies by analyzing and changing the materials system state to develop new technologies and materials with desirable properties and accelerate the innovation implementation in variety industrial sectors (e.g. CleanTech, materials processing).

Technology Development – Biomass Energy Balance Modeling – U.S. & Canada – Process and Mass & Energy Balance Modelling are critical in understanding, development, and optimization of the biomass/waste conversion into clean energy products. Process and Mass & Energy Balance Modelling has been developed and applied for variety biomass/waste conversion and scrubbing/cleaning systems processes.

Technology Development – Biomass/Waste-to-Energy Technologies – Canada – In response to global environmental challenges, various Biomass/Waste-to-Energy technologies, such as gasification, pyrolysis, steam reformation, and Gas-to-Liquide technologies, have been researched and developed to produce clean energy and higher value products from waste feedstocks (e.g. biomass, municipal solid waste, industrial waste, medical waste, sewage sludge, used tires, etc.).

Technology Development & Marketing – Biofuels – Worldwide – Managed a $20 million effort to design, develop and patent various alternative fuels and fuel additives within the biofuels and fossil fuels industry. Designed a marketing strategy for the demonstration and market introduction of the alternative fuel formulations and additive packages both in the United State and in Europe and Asia. Managed the intellectual property through developing a patents and trade secrets based strategy. Lead the R&D team for the laboratory research and product development efforts under the project. Supported raising capital to support all phases of the program.

Technology Evaluation – Enzymes – U.S. – Evaluated the relative and potential enzyme performance, maintained mathematical model that estimates fermentation production cost to assess performance of industrial enzyme value relative to catalyst activity, capital and operating costs.

Technology Evaluation – Gas to Liquid – U.S. – A novel modular syngas upgrading process is under development for small scale. Integrated flowsheets and equipment lists were developed for a variety of cases producing 1,000 to 20,000 bpd of diesel. Evaluation of the novel process in comparison to conventional technologies show that the modular process has significant advantages at the small scale.

Technology Evaluation – Hydrothermal Carbonization of Digestate – Europe – A comprehensive literature review on using digestate from an anaerobic reactor as a feedstock for hydrothermal carbonization was prepared for a European entrepreneur looking into a venture in Australia.

Technology Vetting – Bioplastic – Europe – Review of current state of the art and prospects for future investments in biomass derived plastic materials.  Included suggestions for new materials and projects that led to the preparation of two IP proposals.

Technology Vetting – Wood Pellets – South East Asia – A well-established energy commodity trading company and power producer has been introduced to the global wood pellet market in all details. In a next step a group of pellet mills has been technically evaluated as part of the due diligence before participation in a local pellet producer operating several pellet mills. Advised on how to improve performance of plants and eventually convert them into torrefaction plants has been provided.

Technology Vetting – Wood to Fuels – Europe – A technology study had been commissioned on “drop-in” transportation biofuels from forestry biomass and wood residuals for a demonstration project.  Drop-in fuel technologies using forestry biomass as a feedstock include: catalytic (fast) pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and gasification. A review of these sectors was conducted to identify the best drop-in fuel technologies and their providers from forestry biomass.  The report was interactive, with embedded hyperlinks to major references and company websites using or developing wood-to-(drop-in) fuel processes.

Technology Vetting – Wood to Fuels – Europe – A review of these emerging technologies identified the best-in-class candidates from the first study, and, subsequently, eight companies were selected to receive the Request for Information (RFI).  Respondents were then evaluated, primarily based on the stage of development of their technology.  Each venture was analyzed and recommendations made to the client.

United Nations Study of Pyrolysis Oil Markets – Europe and Japan – At the request of the United Nations, we developed a study of potential pyrolysis oil markets in several EU countries and Japan. Study was of liquid pyrolysis oil, made from biomass, to be used to replace fossil oil in many industrial, commercial and residential applications. At $50/bbl oil, the combined the market size in the EU and Japan exceeds 120 million tonnes, essentially limitless. Some of these markets are very lucrative, and IRRs of investment are high.
